Room 23 Happenings

Hi Everyone,

Sorry for the delayed blog post - it's been a busy few weeks! Room 23 has been on the go celebrating fall, families, and old friends. Here are some things we've been doing:

Fall Celebration

On Thursday, October 27, we had our first classroom celebration! We celebrated the season of fall and we said farewell to two of our dear classmates, Rishith and Sarah. We wish them well on their new adventures in Connecticut and South Korea! Thank you to our wonderful room parents for putting our celebration together!

Painting pumpkins.

Listening to fall stories in our comfy corner.

Coloring fall leaves and raccoons by number.

Field Trip to Wilson Farm

On October 31, we went on our field trip to Wilson Farm! We got to see inside the inner-workings of Wilson Farm, how plants are cleaned and prepped for sale, how flowers are cut and prepped, how plants are grown, and how all of the different parts of the plants are used (even the stuff we think we might throw away!) We even got to see the animals they keep on the farm. Room 23 really enjoyed learning about soil and some of us have started writing All About Books about Wilson Farm! Thank you to the wonderful chaperones (6 of you!) that accompanied us on the trip.

Learning about different types of heirloom fruits. This heirloom squash weighed almost 30 pounds (and it was one of the smaller ones)!

Learning about how plants are cleaned and trimmed, and where the different parts of the plants go.

Walking through the greenhouse learning about how technology is used to make planting and growing flowers more efficient. There were nearly 25,000 poinsettias in the greenhouse. They've been growing them since the summer to get ready for the winter season.

Collaboration

Mrs. Uzenski has been coming into our classroom to teach us about empathy and collaboration. After listening to stories about empathy (being able to understand how other people feel) and collaboration (working together to reach a common goal), Room 23 worked together to get a hula hoop around the circle of students without breaking the link! We were so successful that we tried two hula hoops, going different directions and reached our goal! Through a lot of giggles and positive encouragements, we're learning how to work together better and better everyday.

On an ending note, it was truly wonderful to meet with all of you during parent conferences. I am so excited to keep working together to create wonderful second graders, and wonderful human beings. If you ever need anything, please don't hesitate to ask!

Until next time,

Mrs. Matthews
