Adventures in Writing with the Bowman Big Bear

Last week, Room 23 had the Bowman Big Bear in our classroom! We did a lot of learning with our fuzzy friend - here are some of our pictures.

The bear learned all about doubles and practiced his doubles facts through a game called Doubles Bump. We can use doubles facts in all sorts of ways to help us figure out addition equations!

The Big Bear also helped analyze the soil samples we got from our Big Backyard Walk. He figured out which soils were taken from the baseball field, the forest, and other places around Bowman's Big Backyard!

However, the MOST important thing the Big Bear did was help us celebrate our great Small Moment Stories in Writing!

We had a writing mini-celebration in Room 23 where we got to read, comment, and compliment our classmates' work! The Big Bear was really impressed by how some of the 2nd graders really started writing like our favorite authors.

Here are some examples:

Using wonderful details like Jane Yolen in Owl Moon:

Using repeated words and phrases like Mem Fox in Koala Lou:

And getting our reader really interested by carefully choosing words to describe what is going on around us, like sound words used by Kevin Henkes in Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse!

I hope you all enjoyed reading the published writing your second graders brought home!

Until next time,

Mrs. Matthews
